Best Time to Visit Tanzania
There isn't a single best month — it depends on whether you want the migration, the calving season, or just the driest roads.
Dry season — June to October
This is the classic safari window: little to no rain, thinner vegetation that makes wildlife easier to spot, and the Serengeti's Mara River crossings, which typically run from July through September. Roads are at their best and game viewing across Tarangire, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro is consistently strong.
It's also the busiest and most expensive period, particularly around the crossings — book lodges and camps well ahead if you're travelling in this window.
Calving season — late January to March
The southern Serengeti and Ndutu plains fill with wildebeest for calving season, with up to 8,000 births a day at the peak. The predator action that follows is some of the best game viewing of the year, and camps are noticeably quieter than in the July–September window.
The short and long rains
November's short rains are brief and rarely disrupt a trip — this is a good value shoulder season with green scenery and fewer vehicles. April and May bring the long rains, heavier and more consistent; some camps close, and roads in Tarangire and the southern parks can be difficult. It's the quietest and cheapest time to travel, and far from a washout, but we're upfront with clients about the trade-offs before booking this window.
Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar
Kilimanjaro can be climbed year-round, but the driest, most stable weather windows are January–March and June–October — the same rainy months that affect the parks also raise the risk of poor visibility and slippery trails on the mountain.
Zanzibar's own dry season runs roughly June to October and December to February; the long rains (March–May) affect the island as well as the mainland.
