Visa Tanzania
Most nationalities need a visa for Tanzania, available online in advance or on arrival — the e-visa is the option we recommend.
Who needs one
Most visitors need a visa to enter Tanzania, including for a Zanzibar-only trip — Zanzibar is part of the United Republic of Tanzania and uses the same visa. A small number of nationalities are exempt or eligible for visa-free entry; check your specific nationality against Tanzania's official immigration guidance before you travel.
E-visa vs. visa on arrival
The e-visa, applied for online through Tanzania's official immigration portal before departure, is the option we recommend — it avoids queues on arrival and gives you a confirmed decision in advance. Visa on arrival is still available at major entry points (Kilimanjaro, Julius Nyerere and Zanzibar's Abeid Amani Karume airports) but can mean a longer wait after a long flight.
What you'll need
A passport valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates, with at least one blank page, a passport-style photo, and — depending on visa type — proof of onward travel and sufficient funds. Fees vary by nationality and visa type (single-entry, multiple-entry).
Only use official channels
Apply only through Tanzania's official immigration e-visa portal or at an official border post — a number of unofficial third-party sites charge inflated fees for the same service. If you're ever unsure, ask us; we can point you to the current official process.
