Flying Doctors Services

AMREF Flying Doctors provides emergency air evacuation across East Africa — a sensible addition alongside travel insurance, not a replacement for it.

What they do

AMREF Flying Doctors is East Africa's longest-running air ambulance and evacuation service, operating since 1957. If a medical emergency happens somewhere a road ambulance can't reasonably reach in time — which describes a fair amount of the northern safari circuit — they're the service that gets a client to proper medical care fast.

Short-term membership

Flying Doctors sells short-term tourist membership covering the length of your trip, which covers the cost of emergency evacuation by air within their network. It's inexpensive relative to the cost of an uninsured evacuation, and we can point you to how to arrange it once your trip is confirmed.

Insurance and evacuation membership together

Evacuation membership and comprehensive travel insurance do different jobs: membership gets you out quickly; insurance covers the wider costs — hospital treatment, repatriation, trip interruption — once you're there. We recommend both, not one instead of the other. See our Travel Insurance page for what your policy should cover.
